"Dreaming
still of Minnehaha, Of the lovely Laughing Water..."
-from,
"The Song of Hiawatha", by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The
name of Minnehaha, an Anishnabai, or Ojibway Princess from
the epic poem "Song of Hiawatha", means "laughing
waters" in the Native language.
In the 60's the Garden
River First Nation (Ketegaunseebee) was the natural stage for
the Hiawatha play. The play was conducted along the shores of the
Garden River with the west side of the river bank used as a seating
area while the east side was used as the natural stage. The actors
and actresses were all GRFN members (Pic here) The play was recorded
by CBC and is still broadcast to this day. The GRFN library has
a copy of the Hiawatha play for use by the community. The Ojibway
Park Management adopted the name Minnehaha or "Laughing
Waters" to honour this event.
